Q - What does Yoga mean?

A - The word Yoga comes from the Sankrit root word "Yuj," meaning yoke and implies Union.  Yoga is the union of mind, body and spirit.


Q - What does Namaste mean?

A -  Namaste basically means "I bow to you."  One expanded translation is: The divine in me recognizes and honors the divine in you. When you are aglow with the light of your spirit, and I am lit by mine, then we are one.
Q - What does Hatha Yoga mean?
A - Hatha yoga means the physical practice or postures of yoga. This is where most people in America start the practice of yoga. It is one of 4 types of yoga.  And in some studios you might see it listed on schedules. In general its a more gentle physical practice of postures.
Q - What are the types of Yoga?
A - There are 4 types of Yoga.  Hatha Yoga is the physical practice, Karma Yoga is the practice of selfless service, Bhakti Yoga is a devotional practice and Jnana Yoga is the practice of study or knowledge.
Q - Why do some teachers chant OM?
A - The sound of OM is believed to have great benefits to the human body. It is a circular sound of all things in nature and is believed to massage the bodies nervous system. OM is always optional. If you are not comfortable with chanting in class your yoga teacher will understand.
